THE IMPORTANCE OF A HAIR CONSULTATION BEFORE A COLOUR SERVICE

Are there any rules about what colour your hair should be? Absolutely not!

We love interjecting your personality into your hair, and if you’re happy, so are we.

Have you had your hair colour done countless times over the years, or is it your first time?

Maybe you want multi-tonal hair colour with shades and tones running through, perhaps you want an all over colour, perhaps you want the latest season and fashion favourites, or you want to go all out and try something different.

Whatever you’d like to achieve, getting to the core of what you want is critical before letting anyone, including yourself, make those changes to your hair. Some things need to be considered first.

What are the real reasons behind a hair consultation?

You may think, ‘it’s fine, I don’t need a consultation, I know what I want, so let’s go!’

Having a consultation is for YOUR benefit. We want you to LOVE the hair you leave the salon with. We want you to be PROUD of how your hair looks and feels.

A consultation enables you and your stylist to get to the core of what you want, know what your hair goals are, be sure of how we can get there, as well as making sure you receive our professional advice along the way!

Let’s explain a little bit more about why a consultation is so important…

Knowing your goal:

We need to get to the heart of what you’re trying to achieve.

Of course, a good ole chin wag and looking at hair colour swatches may do the trick. Images are also an excellent way to show your Stylist during a consultation what you are wanting to achieve.

You may have some picture of other people’s hair colour that you love. What we can see online and, in the media, gives us all an amazing amount of inspiration when it comes to our hair so please feel free to bring these along with you…

HOWEVER!

Photo editing and photo filters are widely used before sharing in the media and online nowadays, meaning it’s more difficult to see the true colour of the hair. LIGHTING plays a MAJOR part in how colour looks. Even the brightness level on your phone or computer will change the way the hair colour looks.

If you took a picture of yourself, on your phone with no flash, in 3 different rooms of your house in the morning, and then did the same again in the afternoon, and then again in the evening, you’d end up with a wide array of different hair colours in your photos. COOL, WARM, NATURAL or ARTIFICIAL lighting will make the hair colour look different.

This is something to always bear in mind when you are looking at hair colours online. We’d always recommend showing us a range of images for the colour you are looking to achieve, so we can really understand your goal.

Knowing the information:

Great, we now know your goal. There are lots of things that a hair stylist will take into consideration when knowing how to get you there:

-          How is your hair health right now?

-          What is current hair colour?

-          Have you had other colours used on your hair?

-          How different will this be to your current hair style?

-          Are you ready for a big change or wanting a more subtle difference?

-          Will there be more upkeep for you between appointments to keep your hair looking the way you want?

-          What’s your lifestyle and current hair care routine?

-          How do you style your hair between appointments?

-          How often do you currently visit the salon?

-          Will any of the above need to change moving forward?

-          How will the new colour sit with your skin tone?

-          Can this be achieved in one appointment, or is it a hair journey?

-          Will any of the above affect your hair goal?

These are just a few examples of things your stylist will take into consideration for your hair goal.

Having the answers to these questions allows us to give you better advice and ensure you get what you want from your service (because that’s what you deserve!)

Knowing the tests:

A patch test will always need to be considered before your hair colour can take place. If you’re having any colour on the scalp, be it a colour or even just a toner, a patch test is done to help prevent reactions.

Your stylist may also want to carry out a strand test. This is where a small strand will be taken from your hair (you would never ever notice this has gone as we shed hair naturally ever day!) and the strand test will be treated with the colours or treatment required. This gives the stylist the indication of how your hair will change with the treatment. Will it lift how we want it to? Will it change how we want it to? Will the health of the hair remain intact if these things are done? If all is well, that’s great! If not, then we may need to tweak the process in getting your hair to where you want it to be.

Depending on how you’ve treated your hair in the past, or what colour you are changing from, can make a big difference on the outcome.

Knowing the maintenance:

If you’ve been to the salon before, and haven’t seen another stylist in between your appointments, then not all the things above will need to happen for your next colour service. When we know you, and we know your hair and how we’ve treated it in the past, this consultation process is simplified.

If it’s your first service with us in the salon, we want to ensure you receive the service you deserve. We’ll check all the above to get your hair to your hair goals!
