How Often Should I Be Exfoliating?
Exfoliation is a crucial step in any skincare routine. It helps to remove dead skin cells and reveals a smoother, brighter complexion. However, it’s essential to exfoliate your skin safely to avoid damage and irritation. In this guide, we’ll explore the best methods for exfoliation and introduce you to some gentle, yet effective products that are our favourite at Pure Emporium Skin & Laser Clinic.

Why Exfoliate?
Exfoliation involves the removal of dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. This process can be done using physical (mechanical) exfoliants or chemical exfoliants. While exfoliation can enhance the skin’s appearance and texture, improper techniques or harsh products can cause more harm than good.
The Dangers of Grainy Exfoliants:
Grainy or abrasive exfoliants, such as scrubs with large, uneven particles, can cause micro-tears in the skin. These tiny abrasions may not be visible to the naked eye, but they can lead to irritation, increased sensitivity, and even long-term damage. Common culprits include scrubs with crushed walnut shells or apricot pits, which have jagged edges that can scratch the skin's surface.
Safe Exfoliation Techniques
Choosing a gentle product: Opt for exfoliants with smooth, round particles or chemical exfoliants that dissolve dead skin cells without abrasion. Environ's products are an excellent choice for a gentle yet effective exfoliation.
Frequency matters: Exfoliating too often can strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt the skin barrier. Most skin types benefit from exfoliating 1-2 times per week, depending on sensitivity.
Be gentle: When using physical exfoliants, apply them with light pressure. Scrubbing too hard can cause irritation and damage.
Follow with hydration: Always moisturise after exfoliating to replenish the skin’s moisture barrier and keep your skin hydrated.
Our Pick: Environ's Pre-Cleansing Oil and Clay Masque
For a gentle and effective exfoliation routine, we recommend Environ's Pre-Cleansing Oil and Clay Masque. These products work together to gently buff the skin without causing damage.
Environ Pre-Cleansing Oil: This oil-based cleanser helps to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and impurities from the skin. It preps the skin for deeper cleansing and exfoliation by softening dead skin cells and making them easier to remove. To use, apply a small amount of the oil to your dry face and massage gently. Add a little water to emulsify the oil, then rinse thoroughly. Then massage another layer of the oil into your skin, ready for gentle exfoliation.
Environ Clay Masque: This masque contains a combination of gentle exfoliating agents and clays that draw out impurities while softly buffing the skin. To use, apply a pea sized amount to your hands a massage over into the skin, over your cleansing oil. Wet your hands and quickly, but gently massage the masque into your skin using circular motions for a minute or so. Finish by rinsing off with lukewarm water. Follow with your preferred Environ Moisturiser.
