5 TOP TIPS FOR HEALTHIER HAIR

hair blog 2.png

‘How do I get healthier hair?!’ and ‘How do I prevent damage’ are not only questions we hear, but something we talk about a LOT in the hair salon. With colouring, highlights, and all sorts of other hair treatments, it’s always important to remember the fundamentals for keeping your hair healthy above anything else.

When you get your hair done in the salon, you’ve invested in your hair. We want you to know how to love your hair, not just on ‘hair salon day’ but everyday.

Regardless of your desired hair style or colour, healthy hair trumps the lot…. Every. Single. Time. The healthier your hair is, the better it looks, the better it shines, and the faster it grows too!

Here are our 5 tips to gaining healthier hair.

TOP TIP NUMBER 1)

Regularly receive Trims.

We’ve written a blog all about the important of having regular trims at the salon, which you can read right here. But as an overview, nothing will make your hair look healthier than a good trim. This is easily the best way to keep on top of split ends and prevents any hefty cuts to get rid of them too. Whether you are looking to grow your hair or just get healthier looking hair, a regular trim at the salon is the first thing to remember. Every 6-8 weeks is the perfect timeframe. Nobody needs an excuse to enjoy receiving a relaxing wash, cut and blow dry anyway!

TOP TIP NUMBER 2)

Repair current damage, and prevent future damage.

Perhaps you’ve already got hair damage, and it’s not looking it’s best. Although having regular trims will help, we need to physically treat the problem. The best thing you can do to give your hair a chance is use the right products. We can do everything possible in the salon to help, but you spend more time at home than you do in the salon, so what you do at home is super important!

There are thousands of products on the market, and trying to pin-point the best is a job in itself, so we’re here to give you our personal recommendations.

Firstly, meet Olaplex! Olaplex will become your best friend for repairing and preventing hair damage. Olaplex is a product that includes an active chemistry to work on the hair at a molecular level (yep, it sounds science-ey, because it’s proven!) Basically, it repairs damaged and broken bonds inside the hair. It increases the hairs strength and elasticity as well as preventing further damage by protecting the hair’s follicle. We recommend using Olaplex No.0 and Olaplex No.3 at home, on a regular basis, to provide 68% hair repair.

Secondly, ditch your supermarket shampoo and conditioner and opt for a salon recommended brand. We LOVE Olaplex, Moroccan Oil, or Milk_Shake products for shampoo and conditioning options. All of them feed and nourish the hair, whilst ensuring your colour is maintained, and the best bit is that they don’t include any nasty chemicals or parabens and will help your hair colour to last longer too! Just remember, there is a reason why salons don’t use supermarket shampoo and conditioners…. (food for thought….)

TOP TIP NUMBER 3)

Cut Down on Hair Washing

Some people feel it necessary to wash their hair every single day to feel clean. Trust us when we tell you that you really don’t need to do this. When you wash your hair everyday it is stripping away those hair nourishing natural oils that your scalp produces to prevent your hair drying out. Allowing your hair to get the benefit of these oils can really help the general health of your hair. If you’re in the routine of washing your hair daily, start by slowing things down to every other day. It may feel greasy at first, but we promise your hair will adjust. Use some high-quality dry shampoo to get you though (we’d recommend the Moroccan Oil Dry Shampoo). The truth is, the more you wash your hair, the more oil it produces, so your hair will become greasier even faster if you’re washing it every day. Hair washing twice a week (or even once a week!) is perfect for healthy hair.

TOP TIP NUMBER 4)

Reduce the Heat

We all know that more heat, means more damage. Less heat = less damage. It’s pretty obvious when we say it like this. What can you do to limit the heat on your hair? Rather than washing and styling your hair everyday – could you wear it up in a clip one day, plaiting it when you sleep for waves the next day, messy bun for the day after? There are all sorts of heat no heat styling options out there. By reducing the amount of heat on your hair, you’re automatically reducing the damage.

TOP TIP NUMBER 5)

Protect your hair

We all love the just curled look, or the simply straight look – depending on our natural hair depends just how much styling we need to do to get the desired look. If you need to be using heat to get your desired style, then using a heat protection spray on the lengths and ends will create a barrier between your hair and the hot tools used.

What other things would we recommend to prevent hair damage?

Scrunchie, scrunchie, scrunchie!

Most scrunchies are covered with soft fabric, that glides over the hair shaft. Opt for a scrunchie rather than an elasticated hair bobble if you are tying your hair back.

Choose your hair brush wisely

We’d recommend using a Tangle Teezer to brush your hair. It can be used when your hair is wet or dry, and due to the flexibility of the bristles, Tangle Teezers are renowned at being brilliant to get rid of knotting without the pulling or the tugging, whilst minimizing breakage and hair cuticle damage.

We hope this information has helped! Cheers to healthier, gorgeous hair, everyday!
