Knowing Oily Skin

Last week, in our previous blog, we covered dry skin. We spoke about what dry skin is, what causes it and how we can help nourish it. We know that there are 3 main skin types. Dry, Oily and Normal. Sometimes, you may have more than one skin type. This is called “Combination” skin.

Today, we are going to look at Oily Skin.

What is an Oily Skin Type?

An oily skin type is exactly what it says. The skin is producing too much oil which results in a constant shiny or greasy appearance. Someone who has an oily skin type should treat it correctly. Incorrect use of products can result in the pores becoming larger and blocked. This can cause blackheads and spots. Other types of acne are also common with this skin type.

How To Know Your Skin Is Oily

If the following points describe the way your skin behaves, it’s more than likely that you have an oily skin.

·         Shiny or greasy appearance

·         Visibly larger pores, especially around your t-zone

·         Makeup doesn’t last. It seems to slip off throughout the day

·         Oily areas of your skin having blackheads/spots

The SCIENCE behind it…

Your sebaceous glands (small glands in your skin), are responsible for secreting oil (sebum) onto the skin and hair. Sebum is important as it lubricates the skin and aids protection. This stops the skin from drying out and becoming irritated. When the correct amount is being produced, sebum can also help to remove dead skin cells and other irritants from your pores. However, if you suffer from having an over-active sebaceous gland, it will cause too much sebum to be secreted onto the skins surface. This can create a shiny/greasy appearance and it will also clog your pores. Eventually, leading to the risk of skin imperfections.

Are You Making It Worse?

Here are a few common mistakes that people often make when treating Oily skin.

1.      DON’T SLEEP IN YOUR MAKEUP - If you do not remove your makeup before going to bed, this will clog your pores. Bacteria will also harvest on your skin which can lead to blackheads and breakouts.

2.      EAT A BALANCED DIET – A balanced diet is key for healthy skin. Unhealthy diet habits could mean that you are not getting the correct vitamins and minerals needed to maintain a healthy/ ‘normal’ skin type.

3.      DRINK PLENTY OF WATER - Water is another important component for healthy skin. If you aren’t drinking enough water, your skin will become dry/flaky. This could then cause your sebaceous glad to overproduce sebum, eventually resulting in oily skin.

4.      DO NOT PICK/SQUEEZE BREAKOUTS – Picking a breakout can spread the bacteria fluid across the face. This will result in additional irritation and often more spots. We always say, if you go to bed will Bill, you’ll also wake up with Ben. And nobody wants that.

5.      DON’T OVER EXFOLIATE – A lot of people think that if you have oily skin, you should be exfoliating every day. This is definitely NOT the case. Over-exfoliation can strip the skin of good oils and will weaken the skins protective layer. This will actually result in your skin producing more oil, which will then cause breakouts.

How To Normalise Oily Skin

Oily skin can be one of the hardest skin types to treat. Purely because there are so many different levels/types of oily skin.

At Pure Emporium, we recommend a balance of supplements, as well as topical Vitamin A products to help treat and prevent oily skin.
