Knowing Dry Skin
Sometimes we can take our skin for granted.
We don’t often appreciate our skin when it looks amazing. It’s not until we start to notice negative changes in our skin that we regret all of the times we didn’t love our skin at it’s best. We only ever notice the bad times. We notice when our skin isn’t looking or feeling the way it should.
Our skin is our bodies largest organ. It’s there for protection, regulation and sensation. We only have one skin, and it does so much for us. So why don’t some of us take care of it? To give your skin the best possible nourishment, you should know which skin type you are and what products are best for your skin.
There are three main skin types. Dry, Oily and Normal. Sometimes, you may have more than one skin type. This is referred to as “Combination” skin.
We are going to look at Dry Skin.
What is a Dry Skin Type?
Dry skin generally looks and feels dry to touch. The reason for this is because the skin is lacking moisture in the outer layer. The skin can also appear to have cracks in the surface, it can look scaly, red and it can also look tight. Unfortunately, dry skin can be quite sensitive. Meaning that it can often react to certain products easily. Irritation can also be quite common with a dry skin type, causing it to be quite itchy. If itching or scratching happens, this can cause the skin to be inflamed.
The SCIENCE behind it…
Your genetic makeup plays a part in your skin type. If you suffer from dry skin, it is likely that you are genetically inclined to having an underactive sebaceous gland. This is the gland that produces and provides oil for the skin. An underactive gland will mean that your skin is not getting enough oil to retain moisture and build a protective barrier. This barrier is vital when keeping your skin safe from all environmental factors. All these of course are so important when wanting to have happy, healthy and hydrated skin.
If it’s not genetics…
If it’s not genetics that’s causing you to have dry skin, there are some factors that help play a key part in keeping your skin hydrated.
What are they? What can we do to help our skin?
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. The obvious one. Stay hydrated. If we are dehydrated, it will lead to our skin being dehydrated and dry.
DON’T OVERINDULDGE. Drinking too much alcohol and the regular use of certain medications can cause our skin to become dry.
SUN EXPOSURE. Limit your sun exposure. This can cause the skin to lose moisture and result in that tight feeling. Extreme weathers can have great affects on the skin so it’s important that we are always using the best products and wearing an SPF daily.
AIR CONDITIONING. Air con and cold winds can cause the skin to dry out. It’s important to keep the skin moisturized to prevent this from happening.
