BEAUTY MYTHS YOU NEED TO AVOID

The beauty industry is constantly expanding and you can find information literally anywhere. Online, in a magazine, in books or on posters. We all want to know what is best for us and what will give us amazing results, but sometimes, the information that we are given, is not always correct. In fact, there are many facts out there, that could cause a lot more harm than good.

Have you ever been told to not wear makeup because it will give you spots or to cleanse until you skin is “squeaky clean”? Read on and find out our top 10 Beauty Myths and the truth behind them. Let’s give you tips that will really work.

  1. Packaging isn’t important. It’s the contents that counts.

Packaging is crucial when it comes to your skincare products. There are so many elements that can affect how well your product works. “Pretty packaging” may not give you “pretty results”.

We stock Environ Skincare products in the salon and they ensure that the maximum effectiveness of each formulation is maintained by prevention of exposure to light, heat, air, and irradiation during manufacturing. Environ skin care products are packaged in specific containers which prevents light, air and bacteria from degrading formulations.

2. The higher the SPF = better protection.

An SPF rating only relates to UVB rays. They tell you nothing about UVA rays, which cause skin ageing and play a role in skin cancer. When purchasing a sunscreen, you need to ensure that it has broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection to keep your skin covered. Regardless of the SPF, this is the most important to ensure that your skin is not being damaged.

Look for:

Ø  Broad Spectrum UVA and UVB protection – ALWAYS

Ø  Added Antioxidants – These powerful ingredients will help to reduce the effects that the UV rays have on the skin. These are the UV rays that can unfortunately pass through sun protection.

Ø Please bare in mind that an SPF with a high factor may contain harmful chemicals. So it’s always best to check the ingredients.

3. Oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser.

This seems like an obvious. Why would you want to apply a moisturiser to skin that already feels greasy?

All skin needs hydration. Whether you’re suffering from acne, or your skin is just oily, you still need to moisturise. The main thing is finding a formula that’s made for your skin type. With Environ, there is a range designed specifically for problematic skin. This helps to reduce oil product and generate your overall skin health.

4. Makeup causes spots.

This is a big no no! Makeup definitely doesn’t cause spots. IF you are using good quality products and removing them at the end of everyday.

At Pure Emporium, we love to see great results with skin. And taking our clients on a journey. We all know that great skin does not come easy, and we must work and invest in our skin to get the outcome we want.

The scienc-ey word to describe this is “non-comedogenic”. It basically means that the makeup will allow your skin to breath and function normal!

The entire makeup range was designed to benefit your skin. It contains ingredients that will condition, moisturise and protect your skin. Unlike many high street brands, Jane Iredale does not contain any fillers. Products that you purchase that are not mineral are typically 90% fillers, like talcum powder. This works with coating the skin to aid with concealing imperfections. However, with Jane Iredale, the products use a mineral powder to reflect the light and will give your skin a soft focus. What’s even better is that you will get AMAZING coverage, without applying a thick layer! So, if you’re looking for makeup that will leave your skin looking and feeling amazing, Jane Iredale is perfect for you. Choose mineral makeup and your skin will love you.

From primers to foundations. From bronzers to blushes. From shadows to lipsticks. The range really does have everything.

5. Hairspray can be used to set makeup.

Please no. This is one “trick” that is doing a lot more damage than it is worth. Hairspray has repellents that can leave your skin looking red and feeling itchy and bumpy. It also contains alcohol. This is going to seriously dry your skin out, causing your skin to become dehydrated and you’ll look much older.

Do you really want to be doing this and then feeling sticky, tight and uncomfortable all day?!

Why not try the Jane Iredale Hydration Spray instead? Adds hydration to your skin and keeps your makeup in place all day.

6. “I don’t need to wear an SPF, I never burn.”

There’s no such thing as a safe tan. People who don’t burn or who have naturally darker skin tones are just as susceptible to sun damage as those with light skin.

Stay safe. Wear an SPF every single day.  Rain or shine.

7. Drinking water completely cures dry skin.

When your body is thirsty, it needs water. However, this does not apply to dry, thirsty skin. We tend to think that drinking a lot of water can cure dry skin, but the truth is that it’s not effective. We always advise that you drink enough water daily to stay healthy. But a normally-hydrated person wouldn’t see much of a difference in their skin just by drinking an increased volume of water.

Dry skin is best treated by products. Cleansers, toners, moisturisers, serums. Will all help to boost your skins moisture levels from the outside.

Taking supplements like the Advanced Nutrition Programme’s Skin Omegas or Skin Moisture Lock supplements will help to feed the skin. This is the most effective way to create a change in the skin. Feeding it from the inside-out.

8. Squeeze spots to get rid of the ‘pus’

We know that it can be hard to not squeeze a spot that looks like it’s ready to burst. But, by opening up the area, you can be spreading bacteria and actually causing more breakouts. We like to say, “you’ll go to bed with Bill and wake up with Ben.”

When you squeeze a spot, all of the pus, dead skin cells and bacteria are forced deeper into the skin. You might think that you’re getting it all out, but most of the time, a lot of the infection is actually going into your skin.

Squeezing spots can also make them bigger and more irritated. It can also cause redness and scarring after the spot has healed.

9. Should my skin be squeaky clean?

Some people think that being squeaky clean is perfect. Perhaps items in your house maybe, but NEVER your skin.

Your skin should never feel squeaky clean. If you get that tight or uncomfortable feeling after cleansing your skin, you’re either using the wrong products for your skin or doing it too much.

You should be cleansing your skin twice a day. AM and PM.

10. The only way to improve my skin is by having facials.

It’ a fact that having facials will improve your skin. Especially the Environ Facials. By using the DF Machine, we can push the active ingredients to your dermis (which is the lowest layer of your skin), and this can create a big change.

However, if all you are doing is having a facial every 6-8 weeks, what are you doing on all of the days in between? Nothing?

If you are not using the correct homecare for your skin and following up with an adequate skin routine everyday, then your skin will more than likely go back to where you started before your next facial. What would be the point in that?

So come on. Start your skin journey with us now.

Put these bad habits to bed and start looking after your skin the way you should be.
