HOW YOUR HAIR CHANGES WITH AGE

Just like many other areas of our body, our hair goes through changes. When we notice changes in our hair, we sometimes have no idea why it’s happening.

Our health and how we choose to treat our hair can have big impacts on our hair, but what about our age?

Your hair changes all the way through your life, regardless of any other factor, and it’s all quite interesting!

0-10's

The texture of new-born hair is fine and soft, with the thickness of the hair increasing as we get older. The thickness can change the way the hair behaves and can be the reason some babies start with curls and then the hair turns to being straighter as they grow. The thickness of the hair can impact the texture.

Teens

We’ve all gone through big hair changes during this age period!

Experimenting and trying new things whilst trying to work out your own style and personality. Whether it’s with styles, heated tools, cuts, or colours.

This is also when many hormonal changes will impact the body and can have an impact on the hair. In the later teen years, things such as hormone medication such as contraception medication can impact the way the hair will behave.

During this time, we’re a lot less worried or bothered about the health of the hair. Over processing, and excessive heat damage can take its toll over time, BUT, if rectified early enough this can easily be salvaged.

We highly recommend going to a professional Salon to receive cuts, and (when old enough) colours, by someone who is trained to keep the hair integrity intact, preventing hair damage. (And always use heat protection when using heated styling tools at home!)

20's and 30’s

We now know a little bit more about what we like and what we don’t. Our bodies can still be going through hormonal changes, as well as all the hair-do experimenting, and many people claim during this time their hair feels more fragile than before.

Our hair works in cycles – new hair grows through, keeps growing, sheds (falls out) and a new hair comes through. The length of time for this cycle varies from one person to another, the same as the hair growth rate on the rest of our bodies is individual. The hair is always stronger near the scalp, and as the hair grows longer it can become thinner, finer, and more fragile.

These are also the most common years for women to have children, and this hugely impacts our hormones, in turn, impacting our hair and skin. Some women find their hair becomes stronger during pregnancy, glossier and healthier and then after giving birth it changes again. Some find it’s the opposite way around. Your hair will go through changes due to the hormones and the what’s happening inside the body.

We also need to be much savvier in protecting our hair from the sun. The same way that we know it’s important to protect skin from the sun at all ages, it's also important to shield our hair from UV rays from a young age too. There are lots of incredible products we can advise you on for UV Protection… and a trusty sun hat will make your hair thank you later too!

We’re now starting to be a lot more aware of our hair and how we want it to look and feel as well as being more conscious of the health of the hair during these decades, and by taking supplements such a Biotin, as well as hair strengthening products such as Olaplex, we can really give the hair the step up it needs to be as strong as possible. Speak to your hair stylist about this in the salon.

40's

Surprise, surprise, the hormones are changing again with the peri-menopausal potentially starting and the menopause in sight. This can vary from overall thinning to hair loss or bald spots, due to the fluctuating levels of hormones, and medication used to control things. It is normal to notice more hair falling out in the shower or turning up in your hairbrush.

If you’re finding medication is having a large impact on the way your hair is behaving, it’s well worth mentioning to a medical professional. There may be alternatives you can try to give you the same outcome without the negative side effects. Remember, what works well for your friend may not be the same for you. See how things go, and work forwards from there.

There are also products that can be recommended to you, to help promote thickness, body and volume – your stylist can recommend things for you to try.

50's +

As we age further, your hair scalp will naturally slow down the amount of sebum (oil) it creates. A bonus when it comes to the frequency of hair washing needed, however the hair will feel much drier. To keep the glossiness and moisture levels up, leave in conditioners and hair moisture products can help improve the shine and smoothness of your hair.

If they haven’t already started to show, the grey hairs may be making their appearance now. This isn’t something to worry about! Grey has been a colour trend for the past few years! With age, pigment in the hair gets lost, hence why the hair comes through as grey. Unfortunately, grey hairs do not have as much softness so this needs to be considered when treating the hair too.

Nowadays, hair colours can easily be adapted to accommodate and disguise the growth of the grey. Adding a few soft and subtle highlights to blend in greys to your existing hair colour to create a low maintenance beautiful, blended colour can help with your confidence and your hair texture too.
