WHY IS WASHING YOUR HAIR (THE RIGHT WAY) SO IMPORTANT?

Whether you wash your hair once a week, or few times a week or perhaps daily, are you washing your hair properly and using the correct products or are you causing issues for your hair and scalp?!

Here you’ll receive some tips on making your hair washing thorough and accurate, ensuring you are still working towards your hair goals and the reasons why.  You may think, ‘of course I know the important of washing my hair with shampoo and conditioner and why I do this’… so let’s see if you’re spot on.

First things first… Your Products

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

We know we should all use these two main hero products each time we wash our hair… but are you using the correct shampoo & conditioner for you?

Are you buying them from the Supermarket, Online or from your Salon?

You may assume that it makes no difference, shampoo is shampoo, and conditioner is conditioner, right? Actually - no.

Your hair is made up from protein which grows from the lower skin layers and through your scalp. It goes through a growth cycle so by the time it pops out of our heads, it’s already gone past its strongest point.

Suddenly, it is dealing with environmental factors - heat stress from blow drying, straightening, curling, hair bleaching, hair colouring, chemical treatments, sun damage - even just your everyday brushing and hair ties can cause stress and tension on the hair… the list goes on.

These aren’t necessarily things we can avoid in our day-to-day routines. The best thing we can do is make sure we are treating the hair in the best way possible to lessen the effects of these factors in our routines.

Look at the following list of points and identify which ones suit your hair most:

  • Fine/Thin Hair

  • Coloured Hair

  • Chemically Treated

  • Thick Hair

  • Curly Hair

  • Damaged Hair

  • Hair Loss

  • Scalp Conditions

You can be a mixture of the above points.

Are you sure your current shampoo and conditioner are helping you with your conditions?

Using the correct Shampoo & Conditioner for your hair type is crucial to being happy with your hair in the long run. If you are using products not suited to your hair type, you could be making life harder for your hair, and not getting the results you want as well as potentially undoing the good you’re paying for in the salon – none of us want that! Has your current shampoo and conditioner got ingredients in it that will dull your colour faster? Will it cause unnecessary stress on the hair? Will it really do what it says it will?

This is where we step in.

During your visit to the Salon, you will be asked various questions about your hair. This is what we call a consultation. This is the time to answer questions honestly with your Stylist/Colourist and explain your hair history along with what you currently do with your hair. This openness is crucial for ensuring we can offer the best service and advice to you for your hair.

At the end of a consultation or service in the salon, your Stylist will advise and recommend which Shampoo & Conditioner to use as well as any other products to use at home.

Think of it as a hair prescription.  Your stylist will know how best to treat your hair due to their expertise.

When thinking of the products to take home, always start with the Shampoo & Conditioner recommendations and then introduce other important hair care products suited to your hair and goals to get the best results.

Have you ever been the hair salon, paid let’s say £100 for your full head of foils and Olaplex conditioning treatment, and then been recommended a shampoo and conditioner you can get at the corner shop for 99p each? You and I both know the answer, and it’s no.

There is a good reason why professional hair salons will only recommend specific products to use on your hair at home between appointments. We only focus on products with ingredients that will perform best on the hair. Giving your hair greater results, whilst holding onto the goodness created during your salon visit and enhancing the service you’ve paid good money for. We want your hair to keep getting better and better between salon visits, and unfortunately this cannot be guaranteed with supermarket or high street products.

Trust your stylists’ recommendations – they have the best interests of your hair at heart.

You’ve got the products … Now, how BEST to use them?

Now you have the correct Shampoo & Conditioner, recommended by your stylist – let’s look at how to use them correctly.

This all may seem obvious to you, but the art of washing the hair properly is something regularly overlooked. Read on to check you’re doing it the right way…

When it comes to washing, make sure the temperature is set for your hair, we don’t want to add any extra stress by the temperature being too hot. If you’re someone who loves a hot shower, simply bring the temperature down to a comfortable ‘Warm’ when washing the hair.

Unless otherwise directed by your stylist, always shampoo your hair twice.

Rub in, massage all over, rinse. And Repeat. (You won’t need as much shampoo for the 2nd wash.)

Shampooing twice is done because the first wash breaks down any dirt, oils or product build up.

The second wash deep cleans the hair.

You will notice the second wash will lather up much easier and you won’t need as much product this time around.

Make sure you have thoroughly rinsed the suds away and squeeze out excess moisture from the hair length before moving on to the next step.

CONDITIONER: We condition our hair to add nourishment, replace moisture taken from cleansing, as well as making the hair easier to manage and help protect against future hair stress or damage.

Apply the conditioner from the mid length to the ends and use a tangle teezer/wide comb to comb it through your hair.

Leave it on for around 2 minutes whilst you wash the rest of your body, or simply relax.

After it’s been rinsed, gently squeeze out the last bits of water and towel wrap.

We would never recommend rough drying your hair with a towel. This will encourage tangling and breakage.

Simply use your hair towel to squeeze out excess moisture.

Comb through the hair with a wide tooth comb (or tangle teezer) to prepare for drying.

Round up:

  • Ensure you’re using the recommended shampoo and conditioner from your stylist.

  • Ensure the temperature for hair washing is not too hot.

  • Shampoo twice, unless directed otherwise – rinse thoroughly after each step.

  • Conditioner mid lengths and ends. Rinse thoroughly.

  • Towel wrap your hair.

  • Comb hair

  • Dry

If this is any sort of change to your normal routine, your hair may take time to adapt.

Trust the process and trust your stylist.

Your hair will thank you for it!

Keep your eyes peeled for the next steps on hair homecare when we talk about treating and blow drying your hair.

See you in the chair!
